A new report prepared by the Brookings Institution and JP Morgan Chase offers a detailed look at the geographic origins of foreign students in the United States. It also offers data on where these foreign students reside when they come to America.
The report shows that five cities in Africa sent a total of 15,107 students to U.S. universities between 2008 and 2012. The most students came from Lagos, Nigeria, which sent a total of 4,741 students to study in the United States. Nairobi, Kenya, ranked a close second, sending 4,191 students to America during the period. Accra, Ghana, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ranked third and fourth.
The report found that African students in the U.S. spent about $300 million for tuition and other fees to U.S. universities. The African students also spent about $165 million on living and other expenses, according to the report.
