Eugene Washington Named Chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University

Eugene Washington has been appointed chancellor for health affairs at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and president and CEO of the Duke University Health System. Dr. Washington has been serving as dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine, vice chancellor for health sciences, and CEO of the University of California, Los Angeles Health System. At UCLA, Dr. Washington also serves as a distinguished professor of gynecology and health policy and holds the Gerald S. Levey Endowed Chair. He will begin his duties at Duke on April 1.

Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead said in making the announcement of Dr. Washington’s appointment that “Gene Washington has a track record of outstanding leadership in every aspect of the work of an academic medical center — research, education and patient care. A gifted communicator, he has special skills at getting people to work together in support of the larger mission. He has been at the forefront of the national effort to make patient outcomes the focus of health care. And he is a champion of community health who will bring that commitment to Durham. I’m delighted to have him join the Duke team.”

Before joining the faculty at UCLA in 2010, Dr. Washington was executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California, San Francisco. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Dr. Washington is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He also holds a master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health and a master of public health degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
