Bill Calls for Renaming the University of the District of Columbia to Honor Marion Barry

orangeVincent B. Orange Sr., a member of the Council of the District of Columbia, has proposed that the University of the District of Columbia Community College become a tuition-free institution. Under the Orange plan, students who maintained a 2.0 grade point average and completed community college within in two years would pay no tuition.

Orange also called for the university to be renamed to honor former mayor Marion Barry, who died this past November. Mayor Barry was a major supporter of the university and a strong advocate for higher education. But his 1990 arrest on drug charges and allegations of corruption would work against naming the university after Barry.

Councilman Orange holds degrees in business administration and communications from The University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, a law degree from Howard University, and a master of laws in taxation from Georgetown University.
