The Recording Academy has inducted a 1909 recording of the spiritual “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” sung by the Fisk University Jubilee Singers into the Grammy Hall of Fame. There are now 987 recordings in the Grammy Hall of Fame in Los Angeles, including 27 new titles added this year.
Announcing the 27 new inductees, Neil Portnow, chair of The Recording Academy, stated that “these memorable, inspiring, and iconic recordings are proudly added to our growing catalog – knowing that they have become a part of our musical, social, and cultural history.”
The Fisk Jubilee Singers were established in 1871 at Fisk University in Nashville. The ensemble has traveled the world performing a wide variety of music. In 1873 the group performed for Queen Victoria in London. In 2008 the Fisk Jubilee Singers received the National Medal of Arts for their historic contributions to American music.
