Three Black Scholars in New Teaching Positions

Young_SFUAHorace Alexander Young was appointed chair of the contemporary music program at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design in New Mexico. He has been serving as interim director of jazz studies at Texas Southern University in Houston.

Professor Young is the author of Improvising Jazz Flute (G. Schirmer Publishers, 1990). He holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University and a master’s degree from Washington State University.

BhimullChandra Bhimull was promoted to associate professor of anthropology and African American studies and granted tenure at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She is the author of the forthcoming book Empire in the Air: Airline Travel and the African Diaspora.

Dr. Bhimull is a graduate of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Karen Kal AlstonKal Alston, the senior vice president for human capital development at Syracuse University in New York will be relinquishing many of her administrative duties to return to her position as professor of the cultural foundations of education and women’s and gender studies.

Dr. Alston joined the faculty at Syracuse University in 2005 after teaching at the University of Illinois, where she was director of the women’s studies program. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
