A historic meeting recently took place prior to a Black History Month event at Jackson State University in Mississippi. Reena Evers-Everette, daughter of Medgar Evers, and Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, met for the first time at the Evers’ home in Jackson.
Medgar Evers was assassinated on June 12, 1963 in the driveway of the home. At the time, Reena was 8 years old.
Malcolm X was shot and killed in New York City on February 19, 1965. Ilyasah was three years old at the time.
“We belong to a club no one would want to join,” Evers-Everette said to a packed crowd at the Jackson State University Student Center later that day at the university’s 2015 Black History Makers Forum.
Mrs. Shabazz is far removed from HBCUs based upon her entire educational experience from the expensive private boarding schools to the HWCUs (SUNY, New Paltz). In a current context, Mrs. Shabazz ideological framework is akin to neoliberalism at its finest which is most unfortunate. For example, notice whose in charge of her public relations and book publishing which I find quite telling on numerous levels.
In my view, I think the Honorable Minister Malcolm X (El Hajj Malik Shabazz) would be disappointed in Mrs. llyasah Shabazz because it appears that she’s attempting to be “all things for all people” along with the sanitization of contextual material in an effort to placate to her White liberal funders.
