
Berry was a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma. After serving his country in World War II, Berry enrolled at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, to study art under Aaron Douglas, chair of the art program at the historically Black university. Berry later studied at Columbia University and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
During his long career in education, Berry taught at Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, and Albany State University in Georgia, where he chaired the art department.
