Six African Americans Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

Leykia BrillLeykia Brill was named the inaugural assistant provost for diversity at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has been serving as associate director for student activities at nearby Amherst College. From 2009 to 2014, she served as assistant dean and associate dean in the admissions office at Amherst.

Brill is a graduate of Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree in higher education policy from the University of Pennsylvania.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADeidre Labat was appointed interim senior vice president for academic affairs at Xavier University in Louisiana. Dr. Labat is a professor emerita at the university, who retired from teaching in 2012.

Dr. Labat holds a Ph.D. from the Louisiana State University Medical Center.

BrownChristopher L. Brown was named vice provost for faculty affairs at Columbia University in New York City. He is a professor of history and has served on the Columbia University faculty since 2007. Professor Brown is the author of Moral Capital: Foundations of British Abolitionism (University of North Carolina Press, 2006).

Professor Brown is a graduate of Yale University and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in England.

hofflerUndi Hoffler was appointed interim vice chancellor for the Division of Research and Economic Development at North Carolina Central University in Durham. She has been serving as director of research and compliance in the university’s Office of Technology Transfer.

Dr. Hoffler is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, where she majored in biology. She holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Meharry Medical College in Nashville.

fisherD’Andre Fisher was promoted to special assistant to the vice president for the university community at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He was assistant director of diversity enrichment programs in the university’s Recruitment Services division.

Fisher holds a bachelor’s degree in human relations and a master’s degree in adult and higher education from the University of Oklahoma.

Griffin_ArchieArchie Griffin, the only person to win college football’s Heisman Trophy two times, was named senior adviser in the Office of Advancement at Ohio State University. Since 2004, he has been president of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Griffin earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial relations at Ohio State. After seven years in the National Football League, Griffin returned to Ohio State and worked for 20 years in the athletics department.
