New Administrative Posts in Higher Education for Eight African Americans

smith_jones_tamica_mug-374x561Tamica Smith Jones was named director of intercollegiate athletics at the University of California, Riverside. She has been serving as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Dr. Jones is a graduate of Alabama A&M University, where she majored in business administration. She holds a master of public administration degree from Savannah State University and a Ph.D. in business administration from Warren National University.

tammaradurhamTammara Durham, vice provost for student affairs at the University of Kansas, will take on the additional duties of interim vice provost for undergraduate studies. She has been on the administrative staff at the university since 1998.

Dr. Durham holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. She earned doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Kansas.

gathingsCedric Gathings was named interim vice president for multicultural affairs at Mississippi State University in Starkville. For the past two years, he has been serving as assistant dean of students and director of the Holmes Cultural Diversity Center at the university. Earlier he was associate director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at Mississippi State.

Gathings is a graduate of Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, where he majored in social science. He earned a master’s degree in sociology at Delta State.

Holloman_1Anthony L. Holloman is the new vice president for institutional advancement at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He held a similar post at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Holloman is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. He holds a master’s degree in sports studies from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania.

WashingtonGeovette E. Washington was appointed senior vice chancellor and chief legal officer at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been serving as general counsel and senior policy adviser at the Office of Management and Budget in Washington, D.C.

Washington is a summa cum laude graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. She earned her law degree at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Bernadine-DouglasBernadine M. Douglas is the new vice president for alumni and college relations at Berea College in Kentucky. She was vice president for external relations at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida.

Douglas is a graduate of the University of Florida and holds an MBA from the Webster University campus in Longwood, Florida.

donell-youngDonell Young was appointed director of academic retention services at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He has been on the staff of the department of student life at the university since 2004.

Young hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. He is scheduled to receive a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri School of Law in December.

davistxTimothy Davis was appointed executive associate dean for academic affairs at the law school of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Professor Davis joined the faculty at the law school in 1998 and serves as the John W. & Ruth H. Turnage Professor of Law. He is considered one of the nation’s foremost authorities on sports law. He is the co-author of The Business of Sports Agents: Second Edition (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2008).

Professor Davis is a graduate of Stanford University and the law school at the University of California, Berkeley.

There Are Large Racial Gaps in Doctoral Awards in Specific Disciplines

African Americans earned 7.7 percent of all doctorates earned by U.S. residents and permanent residents. But Blacks are vastly underrepresented in some disciplines. For example, Blacks earned only 1.9 percent of all doctorates awarded in the geological sciences, 1.2 percent of all mathematics doctorates, 2.5 percent of all doctorates in physics, and 1.9 percent of all doctorates in astronomy.
