Ten African Americans Taking on New Administrative Duties in Higher Education

lester-arnoldLester Arnold was appointed associate vice chancellor for human resources at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina. He was senior vice president for human resources for Focus Brands Inc.

Arnold is a graduate of Norfolk State University in Virginia, where he majored in accounting. He earned an MBA from the University of Hartford in Connecticut.

bakerS. Gregory Baker was named director of Police/Community Relations at the University of Cincinnati. In 2012, he founded the Baker and Associates Consulting firm in Cincinnati. He is the former executive manager of community relations for the Cincinnati Police Department.

Baker is a graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., and holds a master of public administration degree in city and regional planning from Ohio State University.

andersonYolanda Banks Anderson was named interim associate vice chancellor for faculty development and resources at North Carolina Central University in Durham. She is a professor of environmental science at the university. She has served on the faculty at the university since 1996 and was promoted to full professor in 2010.

Dr. Anderson is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She holds a master’s degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

AlexisEloise Abernathy Alexis was named vice president for institutional advancement at Tennessee State University in Nashville. She served on the staff at Spelman College in Atlanta for 24 years, most recently as vice president for college relations.

Alexis is a graduate of Spelman College, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree in higher education administration from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Wille ClossWillie T. Closs Jr. is the new vice president of business and finance and chief financial officer at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is the former executive vice president and chief financial officer at the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in Durham.

Closs is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he majored in accounting and business administration. He earned an MBA at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

murphyFrederick Murphy was appointed assistant dean for health and wellness at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. He will be director of the Health Center and Counseling Center on campus.

Murphy is a graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville, where he majored in psychology. He holds master’s degrees from Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Argosy University in Atlanta.

WalkerFountain L. Walker was promoted to chief of police at the University of Chicago. Since 2014, he has been assistant chief of police. He is the former chief of police at Davidson College in North Carolina.

Walker is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, where he majored in criminal justice.

Bruce_Williams_resizedBruce Williams was appointed associate vice president of fiscal affairs at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. Williams owns a certified public accounting firm in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

Williams is a certified public accountant. He is former financial officer at Tougaloo College in Mississippi.

Lincoln University - Kevan TurmanKevan Turman is the new vice president for development at The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Before joining the fundraising staff at Lincoln in 2012, Turman was director of development at Grambling University in Louisiana.

Earlier in his career, Turman held fundraising positions at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, and the University of Delaware.

lewsisAlbert Lewis Jr. was named vice president of economic and workforce development at Bellevue College in Washington. He has been serving as dean of corporate, community, and continuing education at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hill, Illinois.

Lewis is a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, where he majored in speech broadcasting. He holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Akron in Ohio and is currently studying for a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology at Grand Canyon University.
