Five African Americans Named to Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Andra Johnson was appointed assistant director of research in the School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. For the past 13 years, he has served on the faculty in the department of urban forestry at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Southern University. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in forest resources and environmental science from Pennsylvania State University.

kerydavisKery D. Davis is the new director of athletics at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He has been serving as a senior vice president for programming for HBO Sports.

Davis is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where he was a guard on the basketball team and majored in political science. He earned a law degree at Cornell University.

Shea HouzeShea Kidd Houze was named the inaugural director of new student and retention programs at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has been serving as director for external affairs at the University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association.

Dr. Houze is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where she majored in speech communication. She earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in educational psychology and research from the University of Memphis.

CC JacksonC.C. Jackson was appointed director of the Office of Financial Aid at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. She has worked in the field of financial aid for the past decade.

Jackson is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where she majored in religious studies and criminal justice. She holds a master of divinity degree from Virginia Union University and is a second-year Ph.D. student in psychology.

matthewwinstonMatthew M. Winston Jr. was appointed senior associate vice president for alumni relations at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Since 2000, he has been serving as assistant to the president of the University of Georgia.

Winston earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing management from Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business.

In Memoriam: William Strickland, 1937-2024

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
