Five Black Scholars Taking on New Assignments in Higher Education

BarnesCarolyn Barnes is a new assistant professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She was conducting research at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Barnes is a graduate of Virginia Tech. She holds a master’s degree in political science and a Ph.D. in public policy and political science from the University of Michigan.

tondra_loder_jackson2Tondra Loder-Jackson, an associate professor in the department of human studies in the School of Education at the University of Alabama Birmingham, has been named associate editor for the 2016 issue of the Journal of Urban Learning, Teaching, and Research. The journal is a publication of the American Educational Research Association.

Dr. Loder-Jackson is a graduate of Birmingham Southern College. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Chicago and a doctoral degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

VerseyH. Shellae Versey is a new assistant professor of psychology at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She also serves as a faculty fellow for the College of the Environment.

Dr. Versey is a graduate of Tuskegee University in Alabama and holds a master of public health degree from Columbia University. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.

Kisha_LashleyKisha Lashley is a new assistant professor in the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. She recently completed her Ph.D. in management at Pennsylvania State University.

A native of the Caribbean nation of Dominica, Dr. Lashley is a graduate of Berea College in Kentucky and holds a master’s degree in the management of technology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

tysonVanessa Tyson was named assistant professor of politics and international relations at Scripps College in Claremont, California. She is the author of Twists of Fate: Multiracial Coalitions and Minority Representation in the U.S. House, which is forthcoming from Oxford University Press.

Dr. Tyson is a graduate of Princeton University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in politics from the University of Chicago.
