The Special Collections and University Archives at the Ramsey Library on the campus of the University of North Carolina Asheville, has acquired the Isaiah Rice Photograph Collection. The archive includes more than 1,000 photographs of the African American community in Asheville from the 1950s through the 1970s.
Isaiah Rice was employed as a warehouseman and beverage salesman for 40 years. He often took his camera on his delivery route. Isaiah Rice died in 1980. The photographic collection was donated to the university by Rice’s daughter Marian R. Walters and his grandson Darin Waters, who is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina Asheville.
