Robert Martin Screen, an alumnus, faculty member, and tennis coach at Hampton University in Virginia, died on November 18.
Screen graduated from what is now Hampton University in 1953. He joined the faculty and founded the university’s degree program in speech and language pathology. The university claims to have graduated more African American speech-language pathologists than any other educational institution in the nation.
Screen was appointed head tennis coach at Hampton in 1970. During his tenure his teams posted 1,068 victories and won national Division II championships in 1976 and 1989. He is the only African American coach to win a national collegiate tennis championship.
Screen retired as head tennis coach in 2011 after 41 years in the post. He stepped down as chair of the department of communication sciences and disorders in 2010 after serving in that position for more than a half century.
