Tufts University Opens Archives of Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter to Researchers

CarterBookTufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, has announced that the personal papers of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter are now available to researchers. Carter was a middleweight boxer who spent 19 years in prison after being convicted of a triple murder in Paterson, New Jersey. The convictions were later overturned by a federal court. Carter died in 2014 in Toronto.

The archive includes 19 boxes of materials including correspondence, notes, writing, records of court proceedings, and speeches. Much of the material is from the time after Carter was released from prison when he was director of the Association for the Defense of the Wrongly Convicted.

While in prison, Carter authored The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender to #45472 (Viking Press, 1974). He later wrote the autobiography Eye of the Hurricane: My Path From Darkness to Freedom (Lawrence Hill Books, 2011).
