Robert Mann, who holds the Manship Chair in Journalism at the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, recently authored a commentary in the New Orleans Times-Picayune detailing how the campus of historically Black Southern University in Baton Rouge has deteriorated due to a lack of funds for maintenance and repairs.
According to Professor Mann’s report, 19 of the 140 building on campus have been abandoned. Many others have leaky roofs, mold, and broken air conditioning, plumbing, sprinkler, and fire alarms systems.
Professor Mann concludes that “the Southern campus is not just a disgrace. Its deterioration poses a danger to students, faculty and staff.”
