Four Black Scholars in New Teaching Roles

maya-wiley_high-resMaya Wiley was named the Henry Cohen Professor of Urban Policy and Management in the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at the New School in New York. She will also serve as senior vice president for social justice. A civil rights attorney, Professor Wiley has been serving as a legal counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Professor Wiley is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where she majored in psychology. She earned her law degree at Columbia University.

thrower_rRhea Ballard-Thrower, an associate professor in the School of Law at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was named director of University Libraries. She is the former director of the School of Law Library at Howard.

Professor Ballard-Thrower is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and the law school at the University of Kentucky. She holds a master of library and information science degree from the University of Michigan.

rick-loweRick Lowe was named a clinical associate professor of art in the School of Art at the University of Houston. He previously taught at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Stanford University in California. For the past 20 years, Lowe has developed community-based art projects, which he calls “social sculptures.”

Lowe is a native of Eufaula, Alabama. He studied art at Columbus College and Texas Southern University in Houston. In 2014, he was named a MacArthur Fellow.

Anindo_MarshallAnindo Marshall, a percussionist and African dance teacher, was named a lecturer at the Kaufman School of Dance at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She will teach classes in Afro-Cuban dance.

A native of Kenya, Marshall is a graduate of the University of Nairobi.
