Winston-Salem State University, the historically Black educational institution in North Carolina, has unveiled a new logo and branding campaign.
The new logo shows a stone arch which the university says “represents the strength of the Winston-Salem State University community and reflects the faculty and staff’s commitment to advocating for students and providing them a safe and supportive environment in which to pursue their education.”

Elwood L. Robinson, chancellor of Winston-Salem State University, stated that “this is an exciting time at Winston-Salem State University. We are a bold and energetic university and our new logo conveys that very well. It has never been more critical to have a strong brand. A strong brand helps raise the profile of the university, raises awareness for the university, and improves the value of a degree from WSSU. I believe our new logo, new look, and new brand messaging will help others see how fantastic this university is.”
Dr. Robinson was named chancellor of Winston-Salem State University in 2014. He is a magna cum laude graduate of the North Carolina Central University. Dr. Robinson earned a master’s degree from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Pennsylvania State University.
As a Ram alumna, I would have liked to have seen our motto, “Enter to Learn. Depart to Serve” They at least left some history with the founding date of 1892. While modern in concept, the new logo says nothing as a stand alone (as to what it represents).
