Prestigious Honors for Two African American Professors

dawkinsWayne J. Dawkins, professor of professional practice in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University in Virginia, was named as the recipient of the National Award for Excellence in Teaching from the American Journalism Historians Association. Professor Dawkins will accept the award at the association’s annual convention in St. Petersburg, Florida, this October.

Professor Dawkins joined the faculty at Hampton University as an assistant professor in 2006. He was promoted to full professor in 2015. Professor Johnson is a graduate of Long Island University. He holds a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York City.

giborBasriGibor Basri, professor of astronomy emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, is the 2016 winner of the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization from Wonderfest, a nonprofit organization based in Madera, California. The organization’s stated mission is to inspire and nurture a deep sense of wonder about the world. Wonderfest programs stimulate curiosity, promote careful reasoning, challenge unexamined beliefs, and encourage life-long learning.”  The Carl Sagan Prize comes with a $5,000 award that is underwritten by Google.

Professor Basri is a graduate of Stanford University, where he majored in physics. He holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
