North Carolina State University in Raleigh has announced the debut of its new online archive of the Nubian Message. The Nubian Message is a student-operated newspaper that was first published in 1992. The new online archive contains back issues from 1992 through 2005. More recent issues of the newspaper, which is still being published, will be added to the online archive in the future.
The Black student newspaper was started in 1992 in response to student protests that alleged racial bias in reporting by other student-run publications. Tony Williamson, the inaugural editor-in-chief of the newspaper, said that his goal was to “totally, truthfully, and faithfully cover every aspect of African American life at North Carolina State University.”
Patrick C. Neal, director of student media advising at North Carolina State University, notes that “we were enormously gratified when the Libraries approached us about digitizing the Nubian Message. As future historians and others look back at this era at NC State, especially with regard to the Black student experience, I would anticipate these back issues will be an enormously valuable resource.”
