New Faculty Roles for Six African Americans in Higher Education

dr-thomas-kevinKevin Thomas, an associate professor in the department of medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine, has been given the added duties of assistant dean for underrepresented faculty development at the school. In this role he will develop programs to promote success in academic medicine for faculty members who are from underrepresented groups.

Dr. Thomas is a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta. He earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

stewartanthonyAnthony Stewart, the John P. Crozer Professor of English at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, was awarded tenure. He is currently completing a book project with the tentative title, Approximate Gestures: The Infinity of Bothness in Percival Everett’s Fiction.

Dr. Stewart holds a Ph.D. from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, in Canada.

lynchErin Lynch-Alexander, an assistant professor in the Martha Dickerson Eriksson College of Education at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, has been appointed director of the Office of Undergraduate Research at the university.

Dr. Lynch-Alexander is a graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She holds a master’s degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Tennessee State University.

belgraveFaye Belgrave, professor of health psychology and social psychology was promoted to University Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She is also the director of the Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention at the university.

Professor Belgrave holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park.

tasia-smith-may2016Tasia Smith is a new assistant professor in counseling psychology and human services at the University of Oregon. She had been serving as a postdoctoral intern at the counseling center of the University of Illinois.

Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she majored in psychology and sociology. She holds a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Florida.

paul_jacksonjrPaul Jackson Jr. was named the inaugural Garn Family Artist-in-Residence at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

A noted guitarist, Jackson is an Grammy-nominated producer and composer. He has played for many of the nation’s great recording artists and has released eight of his own albums.
