Makerere University, one of the oldest and most prestigious higher educational institutions in Africa, has been closed by order of Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda. Founded in 1922, it was once one of three campuses of the University of East Africa that granted degrees from the University of London. It became an independent national university in 1970.
The Ugandan president stated that he was forced to close the university to “guarantee safety of persons and property.”
Lecturers at the university went on strike in late October. Students protested and clashed with police, prompting the shut down.
