University of Kansas Aims to Increase Diversity in Its Undergraduate Business Degree Programs

The University of Kansas has announced a new program aimed at increasing the number of students from underrepresented groups who enroll in business degree programs at the university.

The Summer Venture in Business Program is a three-day, pre-college summer program that will familiarize potential business students with college academic and social life. Business students, faculty, and corporate executives will give lectures and discuss academic programs in the business school’s eight majors. Students will stay in residence halls and will receive a scholarship to cover the cost of attendance. High school students in grades 10 to 12 are eligible to apply to the program.

The program was envisioned by student government leaders who are also business majors. Stephonn Alcorn, a senior finance major and student body president, reports “we wanted to start this program to provide access to higher education to underrepresented students in Kansas who need it the most. These students deserve opportunities parallel to their peers’ to prepare and succeed in higher education. By identifying these students early, the School of Business and university can track their progress and connect them with existing university success programs.”
