Founded in 1856, Wilberforce University in Ohio is the nation’s oldest private historically Black college or university. The university has accumulated a high degree of debt and has faced student protests over poor living conditions on campus.
In an effort to improve the university’s financial position, Herman J. Felton Jr., president of Wilberforce University, cut $750,000 from the university’s payroll last fall. But additional cuts are needed. President Felton said, “we decided to do some terminations and furloughs and all of us are taking a pay cut; mine more significant than the others.”
Before becoming president of Wilberforce University in 2016, Dr. Felton was senior vice president, chief operating officer, and vice president for institutional advancement at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He is a graduate of Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida and earned a law degree at the University of Florida.
Great start to the improvement of maintaining this historically private black university.
It is better to take some steps backwards, so that you can continue moving forward. God speed!!! Everett
