The board of governor of the University of North Carolina System has named Johnson O. Akinleye as the 12th chancellor of the North Carolina Central University in Durham. He has served as interim chancellor since January.
In accepting the appointment. Dr. Akinleye pledged to “continue to assess, evaluate and transform the university to increase efficiencies, sustain shared resources, expand its academic portfolio, enhance its brand and reputation, as well as excel in the competitive global marketplace and evolving higher education landscape.”
Dr. Akinleye was named provost at North Carolina Central University in 2014. Prior to being named provost. Dr. Akinleye had been associate vice chancellor for academic programs at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Earlier in his career, he was vice president for administration and chief operating officer at Edward Waters College, a historically Black educational institution in Jacksonville, Florida. He has also held faculty and/or administrative posts at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Bowie State University in Maryland.
Dr. Akinleye is a graduate of Alabama A&M University, where he majored in telecommunications. He earned a master’s degree in media technology from Alabama A&M and a Ph.D. in human communications from Howard University.
