Haywood Strickland to Retire From Presidency of Wiley College

Haywood L. Strickland has announced that he will step down as president of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas at the end of the 2017-18 academic year. Historically Black Wiley College, located in East Texas, just west of Shreveport, Louisiana, enrolls about 1,300 students. The college is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

President Strickland has led Wiley College since 2000. In 2014, he was elected president of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church.

President Strickland is a graduate of Stillman College in Alabama.

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
