Four African Americans Appointed to Faculty Positions

Nathan Alexander was named the Simons Visiting Professor in the department of mathematics at Morehouse College ​in Atlanta. He will be on leave from his faculty position as an assistant professor of mathematics and statistics education at the University of San Francisco.

Dr. Alexander is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he double majored in mathematics and sociology. He holds a master’s degree in teaching mathematics from New York University and a Ph.D. in mathematics and education from Columbia University.

John Robinson was appointed associate professor of music and director of university bands at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. He was an assistant professor of woodwinds at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

Dr. Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in woodwind performance from the University of Georgia. He earned a doctor of music degree from Florida State University.

Florence Lyons, a professor of speech at Albany State University in Georgia, was named director of the university’s Honors Program.

Dr. Lyons is a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned a master’s degree from Oklahoma City University and a Ph.D. in theatre criticism from Louisiana State University.

Esperanza Spalding was named a professor of practice in the music department at Harvard University. She will teach at Harvard during the spring 2018 semester. A bassist, singer, and songwriter, she has won four Grammy Awards.

Spalding is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston and later served as an instructor at the college.
