The Minority Rights Coalition, an assemblage of student groups at the University of Virginia, issued a list of 10 demands to the university’s administration in the wake of the race-related violence that took place in Charlottesville last month.
The student groups, which included the University of Virginia Black Student Alliance, called for the removal of Confederate plaques that are on the rotunda and the renaming of buildings that honor White supremacists, eugenicists, or slave owners. The students groups also called for “required education on White supremacy, colonization, and slavery.”
The students also called for the university to increase the Black percentage of the student body from its present 6.4 percent to 12 percent, which would more closely match the Black population of Virginia. The coalition also demanded that the percentage of Black faculty be doubled.
