HBCUs Report Impressive Enrollment Gains

Alcorn State University in Mississippi reports that the first-year class is the largest in university history. There are 740 entering students this year, an increase of 38 percent from a year ago. The large entering class boosted total enrollments at the university to 3,592 students. These enrollment figures occurred while the academic quality of entering students as measured by their average scores on the ACT college entrance examined increased.

At Virginia State University, there are 1,139 first-year students on campus. Two years ago, there were only 766. First-year enrollments are up 10 percent from one-year ago.

At Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina, there are 235 new students on campus this fall. The first-year class at Voorhees College is the largest in the past seven years.

At Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina, the entering class numbers more than 500 students. It is the largest first-year class in university history.

There are 510 entering students at Kentucky State University. The influx of new students has forced the university to house students in the Capital Plaza Hotel in downtown Frankfort.
