Darnell Johnson, a long-time educator and professor of mathematics at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, died on November 9. He was 66 years old.
A native of Henderson, North Carolina, Dr. Johnson was a 1973 graduate of Elizabeth City State University, where he was captain of the football team and president of the Student Government Association. He went on to earn graduate degrees at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Johnson taught in the public school system in Portsmouth, Virginia, for 30 years. He then served as assistant dean of education at Hampton University in Virginia, and later as an endowed professor and chair of the mathematics department at Elizabeth City State University.
He retired from teaching in 2015.
