Fayetteville State University, the historically Black educational institution in North Carolina, has announced that Ron Carter has been named the Felton J. Capel Professor of Performing and Fine Arts at the university.
Carter has had a successful career as a jazz musician playing the saxophone, clarinet, and flute. But also, he has had strong ties to the academic world. He was director of jazz studies and director of the Jazz Ensemble at Norther Illinois University. Earlier in his career, for 18 years Carter was director of the Lincoln Senior High School Jazz Band in the East St. Louis, Illinois.
Carter holds a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
