Five African Americans Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

Christopher M. Whitt was named the inaugural vice provost for institutional diversity and inclusion at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He was an associate professor and chair of the department of political science at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Dr. Whitt is a graduate of Salisbury University in Maryland. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.

Todd S. Bryson was appointed interim associate chancellor for diversity at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Bryson was serving as assistant director of operations and facilities for Recreational Sports and Services at the university.

Bryson is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. He holds a master’s degree in recreation management from Southern Illinois University.

Teresa Williams is the new director of TRIO student support services at Washington University in St. Louis. She had been serving as the program manager for GEAR UP in the East St. Louis, Illinois School District. Earlier, she held dean posts at Quincy University in Illinois and the University of Virginia.

Dr. Williams is a graduate of Washington University, where she majored in African and African American studies and political science. She holds a master’s degree in education from Webster University in Missouri and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Saint Louis University.

Antonio M. Boyle was appointed vice president for strategic enrollment at Delaware State University. He was vice president for enrollment management at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Earlier in his career, Boyle was senior vice president of enrollment management and student services at Wilberforce University in Ohio.

Boyle earned a bachelor’s degree in business and an MBA at Alabama A&M University.

Maurice Gibson was promoted to serve on the chancellor’s cabinet as chief diversity officer at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. For the past three years, he was assistant vice chancellor for diversity.

Gibson is a graduate of Louisiana State University and the Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge. He is currently working on a Ph.D. in history at the University of Memphis.

In Memoriam: William Strickland, 1937-2024

Strickland spent his lifetime dedicated to advancing civil rights and Black political representation. For four decades, he served as a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he taught courses on Black history and the civil rights movement.
