Three Black Scholars Selected for Dean Positions at Major Universities

Jonathan Grady is the new dean of students and associate vice chancellor at the University of California, Merced. He was assistant vice chancellor at the University of Michigan-Flint. Earlier, Dr. Grady was assistant dean of students for intercultural affairs at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

Dean Grady is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where he majored in psychology. He holds a master’s degree in history and Africana studies from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and a Ph.D. in urban education and policy from UCLA.

André-Denis Wright was selected to become the next dean of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences at Washington State University. He will take on his new duties on June 1. Dr. Wright currently serves as director of the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Wright is a graduate of Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he majored in biology. He holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

Riché Barnes, who has been serving as a professor of sociocultural anthropology and assistant dean of social sciences at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, was named dean of Pierson College at Yale University. She is the author of Raising the Race: Black  Career Women Redefine Marriage, Motherhood and Community (Rutgers University Press, 2016).

Dr. Barnes is a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, where she majored in political science. She holds a master’s degree in urban studies from Georgia State University and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Emory University in Atlanta.
