Historically Black Howard University in Washington, D.C., is creating a new fellowship program in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and GlaxoSmithKline, the large pharmaceutical company.
The two-year fellowship will provide practical training and experience in regulatory affairs for fellows to gain expertise in regulatory approaches and requirements for drug development and marketing. Through a combination of academic, industry and regulatory rotations, fellows will develop an in-depth understanding of the drug development process and regulatory affairs processes from the pre-clinical to post-marketing stages.
The program will recruit candidates with a background in the field of pharmacy, such as those with doctoral degrees in pharmacy. These individuals will have the opportunity to gain direct experience by working alongside FDA and industry professionals to address current and/or evolving clinical development and regulatory topics.
Toyin Tofade, dean of the College of Pharmacy at Howard University, stated that the “College of Pharmacy demonstrates its commitment to excellence and leadership by partnering with GlaxoSmithKline and the FDA to offer this Fellowship in Regulatory Affairs and Policy. The knowledge gained by the fellows will strategically position them to affect regulatory and policy matters from a perspective that is one of a kind in the industry.”
Before becoming dean at Howard University in 2016, Dr. Tofade was assistant dean of the Experiential Learning Program and associate professor in the department of pharmacy practice and science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore. She is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. Dr. Tofade earned a master’s degree in pharmacy practice and a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
