Tennessee State University, the historically Black educational institution in Nashville, has recently established a scholarship fund to honor alumnus James Shaw Jr.
On April 22, Shaw was at a Waffle House restaurant in Antioch, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. A gunman entered the restaurant and started firing his weapon. Four people were killed and several others wounded. The 29-year-old Shaw wrested the rifle away from the gunman and tossed it over the counter before shoving the shooter out the door. Authorities have said there would have probably been more casualties had it not been for Shaw’s actions.
At a ceremony on campus honoring Shaw, Glenda Glover, president of Tennessee State University, stated that “the TSU family is extremely proud of alumnus James Shaw, Jr. for his bravery and courage. James epitomizes the core values and mission of our institution, which is think, work and serve. His genuine concern for the well-being of others is a tribute to his parents, who are also TSU alumni.”
In addition to the scholarship named in his honor, Shaw will receive a Special Presidential Recognition at Tennessee State’s homecoming in October.
Thank you TSU and TSU alumni James Shaw, Jr. and parents. The recognition and honor is well deserved.
