Phail Wynn Jr., the former president of Durham Technical Community College and then a long-time administrator at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, died on July 24 at his home in Durham. He was 70 years old.
Dr. Wynn retired from his post as vice president and director of the Office of Durham and Regional Affairs at Duke University in North Carolina, on June 30. Dr. Wynn came to Duke in 2008 after serving for 28 years as president of Durham Technical Community College. He was the first African American president in the North Carolina Community College System.
Dr. Wynn was a graduate of the University of Oklahoma. After six years in the U.S. Army that included a combat tour in Vietnam, he earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
