The National Park Service Funds Restoration Projects at 18 HBCUs

Eighteen historically Black Colleges and Universities have been awarded grants totaling $8.6 million from the National Park Service to support the preservation of significant historical structures on their campuses. The deputy director of the National Park Service stated that HBCUs are an important part of higher education in America and that the grants will be able to enhance historical sites that are points of pride on these campuses.

Here is a list of the HBCUs that will receive grants, the renovation project at that school, and the amount of the grant.

* Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, will begin phase II of the renovation of the James Monroe Cox Administration Building ($304,258).

* Howard University in Washington, D.C., will renovate the Founders Library for handicap accessibility ($500,000).

* Delaware State University will preserve historic Loockerman Hall ($500,000).

* Clark Atlanta University in Georgia will rehabilitate Park Street Methodist Episcopal Church ($500,000).

* Fort Valley State University in Georgia will renovate the historic Bywaters Building ($470,000).

* Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, Missouri, will rehabilitate the Vashon Community Center ($500,000).

* Tougaloo College in Mississippi will rehabilitate the interior of the John W. Boddie House ($270,000).

* Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, will preserve Biddle Memorial Hall ($496,186).

* Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, will rehabilitate its Andrew Carnegie Library ($500,000).

* Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina will rehabilitate Tupper Memorial and Estey Halls within Raleigh’s East Raleigh-South Park Historic District ($480,000).

* Saint Augustine’s University in North Carolina will preserve the Saint Augustine’s University Chapel ($312,250).

* South Carolina State University in Orangeburg will preserve Wilkinson Hall ($500,000).

* Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina will stabilize and preserve Booker T. Washington Hall ($500,000).

* Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, will being the Morgan Hall Preservation Project ($500,000).

* Virginia Union University in Richmond will preserve Huntley Hall ($500,000).

* Hampton University in Virginia will start the Wigwam Preservation Project ($500,000).

* Virginia State University will preserve Vawter Hall ($493,815) and Storum Hall ($274,278).

* Virginia University of Lynchburg will preserve Humbles Hall ($499,213).
