The Black Alumni of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, recently held an awards ceremony honoring 13 of their own. Honorees included star athletes and students from the “SMU 33,” a group of students who staged protests at the university in 1969 calling for greater diversity in the university’s faculty and curriculum.
The alumni association also established the Black Alumni Scholarship. Eligibility requirements include membership in the Black Student Association, a 3.0 grade point average, and a demonstration of financial need. The scholarship will be awarded to either a rising sophomore or to a graduate student.
