Lawrence D. Bobo Named Dean of Social Sciences at Harvard University

Lawrence D. Bobo has been named dean of social sciences at Harvard University. He currently serves as the W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Social Sciences and chair of the department of African American Studies. He has been a Harvard faculty member since 1997.

Previously, Dr. Bobo held tenured positions at the University of California, Los Angeles and Stanford University, where he was also the director of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. Additionally, he is a member of the National Academy of Science and a fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Bobo is magna cum laude graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, where he majored in sociology. He also holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. both in sociology from the University of Michigan.

Professor Bobo is the author of Prejudice in Politics: Group Position, Public Opinion, and the Wisconsin Treaty Rights Dispute (Harvard University Press, 2006) and co-author of Racial Attitudes in America: Trends and Interpretations (Harvard University Press, 1985).
