Kerwin Charles Appointed Dean of the Yale School of Management

Kerwin Charles has been named the Indra K. Nooyi Dean of the Yale School of Management. He will assume his new duties on July 1, 2019.

Since 2005, Dr. Charles has been on the faculty at the University of Chicago, where he currently serves as the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor at the Harris School of Public Policy. During his tenure at the University of Chicago he has overseen multiple centers and programs within the Harris School and has previously served as the school’s deputy dean and interim dean. Before coming to Chicago, he served as a faculty member in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the department of economics at the University of Michigan.

As an academic, Dr. Charles has conducted extensive research on various topics such as earnings and wealth inequality; conspicuous consumption; race and gender labor market discrimination; the intergenerational transmission of economic status; worker and family adjustment to job loss and health shocks; non-work among prime-aged persons; and the labor market consequences of housing bubbles and sectoral change.

For his success in the field of economics, Dr. Charles was named a member of the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2002. He is an elected fellow of the Society of Labor Economics, serves on the boards of NORC (formerly the National Opinion Research Center) and the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, and is a member of the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Labor Economics and the international editorial board of the Industrial and Labor Relations Review.

“I am confident that Professor Charles, a renowned economist and award-winning educator, will advance SOM’s role as a global center for the study of business and prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of a complex interconnected world,” said Peter Salovey, president of Yale University.

Dr. Charles is a graduate of the University of Miami. He holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. both from Cornell University.
