Appointments & Awards

The faculty appointments are Heather Tookes at Yale University, Yaa Oparebea Ampofo at Columbia University, Curtis R. Govan, Jr., II at Jarvis Christian University, Shaun Ossei-Owusu at the University of California College of Law, San Francisco, Arnold Holland at California State University, Fullerton, and Lyrric Jackson at Spelman College.

Deborah Willis is a University Professor and chair of the department of photography and imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She will be presented with an American Book Award on September 28.

Alton C. Standifer is chief of staff at Clemson University in South Carolina and Alfred S. Chandler Jr. is chief of police at Hampton University in Virginia. Tamara White is the inaugural director for belonging and servingness at the University of Northern Colorado and Ashley Robinson is the athletic director at Texas Southern University.

The appointments are David W. Brown at Temple University, Christina Baker at the University of California, Merced, Dennis C. Sweet IV at Washington and Lee University, Trena Warren at Belhaven University, Tiffani Chidume at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Avery Bargassé at the University of Cincinnati, Jean Beaman at the City University of New York, and Aimee J. Carlisle at the College of Law at the University of California, San Francisco.

The American Counseling Association has presented its Robert H. Rencken Emerging Professor Leader Award to Brittany Suggs, an assistant professor and graduate clinical coordinator in the department of counseling and human services at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mattie White and Katreshia Louis-Verrett are the new athletic directors at Emory University and North Carolina A&T State University, respectively. Kizzy N. Lea is chief financial officer at Livingstone College and William C. Nelson Jr. is chief of staff to the provost at Virginia Commonwealth University.

At North Carolina Central University, Tryan L. McMickens is a new associate dean in the School of Education. Katrina Smith and Nakia Davis are taking on associate dean roles in the School of Law.

Dr. Lokko focuses her work on the intersectoral design and research of bio-based materials to drive ecological health and generative justice goals. She currently serves as an assistant professor in the School of Architecture and assistant director of the Center for Ecosystems in Architecture at Yale University.

Dr. Achebe, an endowed professor at Michigan State University, is known for her research on the study of women, gender, sexuality, and oral history in Nigeria.

The National Association of College and University Business Officers is honoring Dawn Rhodes, chief business and finance officer and senior vice president at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Daniel Hastings has been granted the highest faculty honor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Linda Baker of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Derrick Cohens of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff are taking on leadership roles at their institutions. Florida State University's Alma Littles is the new president of the Florida Medical Association.

Dr. Threadcraft is a member of the Vanderbilt University faculty. Her new book, The Labors of Resurrection: Black Women, Necromancy, and Morrisonian Democracy, has received two book awards from the American Political Science Association.

The appointments are Akirah Bradley-Armstrong at MIT, Corey Edmonds at Morris College, Nechell Bonds at Prairie View A&M University, Juanita Womack at Emory University, Taran L. McZee at Talladega College, Nakia Pugh at the University of the District of Columbia, and Rosalyn Galloway at North Carolina A&T State University.

Emery Brown was granted MIT's highest faculty title and Denise Davis-Maye is the inaugural associate provost for faculty affairs at Albany State University. Jeffrey Allen Murdock, Shaundra Daily, and Maxie Hollingsworth have joined the faculties of Yale University, the University of Tennessee, and Sam Houston State University, respectively.

Among this year's recipients of the National Black Nurses Association's Trailblazer Awards are four Black scholars currently teaching at universities: Angela Frederick Amar of New York University, Felesia Bowen of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Stephan Davis of Georgetown University, and Selena Ann Gilles of the University of Pennsylvania.

Lewis Sr. and Jennifer Hunter joined the faculties of Rust College and Virginia Commonwealth University, respectively. Yale University's Marlene Daut was selected for a fellowship at New York Public Library, and Kenni Zellner is an endowed visiting assistant professor at Boston College Law School.

The University of Georgia Libraries has honored Dr. Blain, professor of history and Africana studies at Brown University, for her latest book, Without Fear: Black Women and the Making of Human Rights.

Jennifer Clark, Loria Oliver, and Rashanda L. Lowery are taking on leadership roles at Jackson State University, the University of Arkansas, and Livingstone College, respectively. Georgia Southern University's Memory Littles was appointed to a University System of Georgia committee, and Kenny Thompson has joined the College Sports Commission.
