Faculty

The four Black scholars n new faculty roles are Richard Price at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Pernella Rowena Deams at Talladega College in Alabama, Cynthia E. Rogers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Omolade Adunbi at the Univerity of Michigan.

Chandice Haste-Jackson, a family science faculty member at Syracuse University was named an associate dean. Jorim E. Reid Sr. was named assistant professor and director of bands at Morgan State University in Baltimore and Alicia Monroe, a professor of family medicine, was named chief integration officer at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Taking on new titles or roles are Cedric Merlin Powell of the University of Louisville, Carolyn Ratteray at Pomona College in Claremont, California, Jason Hall at the Tufts School of Medicine in Boston, Pearl Dowe at Emory Univerity in Atlanta, and Jay Pearson at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

G. Gabrielle Starr, president of Pomona College in Claremont, California was appointed the McConnell Professor of Human Relations at the college. Rebecca Brückmann is a new associate professor of history at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and Tyson H. Brown was named the W.L.F. Associate Professor of Sociology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

The four Black faculty in new roles or posts are Malinda Wilson-Swoope at Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida, Peter Ukpokodu at the University of Kansas, Norrisa Haynes at Yale Medical School, and Fousseni Chabi-Yo in the School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Tracey Denean Sharpley-Whiting was named vice provost at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and Nontsikelelo Mutiti was named director of graduate studies at the Yale School of Art. Noémie Ndiaye was named to an endowed assistant professorship at the University of Chicago and Shola K. Roberts is joining the faculty at Arizona State University.

Baron Kelly was appointed to the Vilas Distinguished Professor of Theatre and Dance at the University of Wisconsin. Roxane Gay was appointed to the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair at Rutgers University in New Jersey and Cherene Sherrard-Johnson was appointed the E. Wilson Lyon Professor of the Humanities at Pomona College in California.

Stephen Best is the new director of the Center for the Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley. Lakeyta Bonnette-Bailey will co-direct the Center for the Advancement of Students and Alumni at Georgia State University and Desmond Upton Patton was named to an endowed chair at the University of Pennsylvania.

The three Black scholars who have been appointed to named professorships are Regina Stevens-Truss at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, Fousseni Chabi-Yo in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts  Amherst, and Evelynn Hammons at Spelman College in Atlanta.

Taking on new duties are Valerie Giddings at North Carolina A&T State University, Collin Stultz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Robin R. Davis at Virginia Union University in Richmond, and Giselle Armond Abron at the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine.

Arwin Smallwood, a professor of history at North Carolina A&T State University, was named interim vice provost for undergraduate education. Courtney-Savali Andrews will join the faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and Jerelle Joseph will be an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering at Princeton University.

Elizabeth West was appointed to the John B. and Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Distinguished Chair in English Letters at Georgia State University. Regina Stevens-Truss was appointed the Dorothy H. Heyl Senior Endowed Chair in Chemistry at Kalamazoo College and Deondra Rose was named the Kevin D. Gorter Associate Professor at Duke University.

Kristina G. Douglass was the Joyce and Doug Sherwin Early Career Professor in the Rock Ethics Institute and assistant professor of anthropology and African studies at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Douglass' research focuses on investigating human-environment interaction in Madagascar.

The five Black scholars who have been assigned to new roles or duties are Antwan Jones at George Washington University, Kiron Skinner at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, Marty Baylor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, Bunmi Olatunji at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and James W. Mickens at Harvard University.

Jonathan Bailey Holland was named to an endowed chair and as director of the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon Unversity in Pittsburgh. Deidre W. Evans, a computer scientist, will lead the Honors Program at Florida A&M University and Gwendolyn Scott-Jones was appointed to an endowed chair at Delaware State University.

Byron D. Ford was appointed to the M. Wharton Young Endowed Chair in Anatomy at the Howard University College of Medicine and Allison Curseen has been appointed the Cooney Family Assistant Professor at Boston College.

The college will consider scholars and artists from across the academic spectrum for whose teaching and research will address race, racism, and social justice, with a particular focus on the challenges, histories, movements, and artistic and cultural productions of Black communities in the Americas.

Taking on new faculty duties are Anita Plummer at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Fiemu Nwariaku at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Maxine Montgomery at Florida State University, and Michael Hill at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

Ralph Etienne-Cummings, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Johns Hopkins University, has been given the added duties as vice provost for faculty. Ruth Simmons, who is stepping down as president of Prairie View A&M University in Texas, will take a faculty post, and Major Jackson, a professor of English and director of the creative writing program at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, was named to an endowed chair.

Thomas W. Mitchell and Lisa T. Alexander come to Boston College Law from Texas A&M University School of Law, where they co-founded and co-direct the Program in Real Estate and Community Development Law. Jenna Cobb comes to Boston College Law from the Special Litigation Division of the Public Defender Service.
