Augustana University Department of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2024. The department seeks to hire a scholar and teacher with expertise in Jewish and Christian Scriptures. The department has a special interest in candidates whose research and teaching integrate diverse methodological approaches including but not limited to global, cross-cultural, or comparative hermeneutical lens, race and ethnic studies, gender and sexuality, and postcolonial/decolonial theories. A doctoral degree in religion, theology, or similar discipline is required.
Successful applicants will demonstrate strong commitment to excellent teaching in a liberal arts environment and to mentoring undergraduate students, including in advising, research and pre-professional clinical experience. The candidate will be expected to teach religion courses to both majors and non-majors, and will also have an opportunity to teach courses in our First-Year Seminar program as well as our interdisciplinary Civitas honors program. Candidates must be able to teach Religion 110: Exploring the Christian Faith, a required class for all Augustana students. The ideal candidate will expand existing course offerings by adding at least one course in their main area of expertise and offer courses that support or expand our growing InterReligious studies minor. In response to Augustana’s location, the most desirable candidate will be able to engage with Native American spiritualities in some way. Teaching load is 3 classes each Fall and Spring and 1 course in January term. The candidate can expect to teach at least 4 sections of Religion 110 per year.
