Lecturer (Doctoral Schedule): Sociology and Anthropology

Baruch College

Job Description:

“At Baruch College we believe that student success is everyone’s responsibility”

The Sociology and Anthropology Department at Baruch College, a senior college of the City University of New York located in the heart of mid-town Manhattan, invites applications for a full-time doctoral lecturer position to begin August 28, 2025. The department is housed in the college’s Weissman School of Arts and Sciences. This school serves all Baruch students in its introductory courses; many minors in its upper-level courses, and an increasing number of majors, who take 18 credits in their chosen department. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to its mission of educating one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States.

The successful candidate will teach in either or both of our general education courses, Introduction to Sociology and Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, as well as upper-level courses in the area of their Ph.D., preferably in race and ethnicity; environment, sustainability, and climate change; and/or cultures and societies and technology. Evidence of ability to engage students in experiential, community-oriented, New York City-based learning will be strongly considered. Lecturer faculty are eligible for professional development and travel funds.

Lecturer lines, including Doctoral Lecturer lines, are defined as teaching and service lines that have no research requirements. Lecturers teach 24 contract hours per year. Department courses typically receive 3 credits; “jumbo” sections in introductory courses, one per term, typically receive six credits. Lecturers participate as full faculty members of the Department, the College, and CUNY. Service includes committee service and participation in assessment, curriculum design, and student mentoring. In their fifth year, Lecturers become eligible for promotion to a Certificate of Continuous Employment, the equivalent of tenure at CUNY, based on teaching excellence and dedicated service.

Candidates will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate teaching excellence, including course and assignment design,
  • Demonstrate effective teaching in a variety of teaching modalities, including the use of educational technology to support teaching and learning,
