Bates College a private, highly selective, residential college in Lewiston, Maine is devoted to undergraduate study in the liberal arts. The Department of Biology invites applications for a one-year full time Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology, beginning August 1, 2024. Ph.D. is required by the start date. The department is seeking a biologist whose teaching and research is centered around microbiology.

Teaching responsibilities (5 courses) will include contributions to the biology and general education curriculum. These courses will include a 100-level general education course, a biostatistics course with lab at the 200-level, a 300-level microbiology course with lab, and a 400-level seminar and research course.

Bates and the Biology Department are committed to enhancing equity and inclusiveness of the campus and the curriculum. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching as well as demonstrated success or potential for working with underrepresented, first generation, and marginalized student populations. The search committee expects applicants to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas and describe how their teaching can further this goal. As well, the department expects to support the success of visiting professors through mentorship and professional development opportunities.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. by August 2024.
