About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Senior Director of the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), the Associate Director provides administrative leadership of the University’s Animal Care and Use Program through support of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and oversight of the Animal Research Compliance (ARC) team. The Associate Director also has responsibility for the University’s Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) program and Committee. This role will adeptly and independently interpret and apply federal regulations governing animal research and embryonic stem cell research, stay apprised of evolving regulations, lead investigations as needed, and work with key stakeholders to amend institutional policies and practices. The Associate Director supports the IACUC meetings, is responsible for preparing meeting agendas and materials, reviewing meeting minutes, and for training and advising IACUC members on applicable regulations, policies, and review criteria. They are also responsible for integrating the ARC program with Brown University’s Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to facilitate compliance with regulatory requirements. The Associate Director supports the ARC team in day-to-day collaboration with faculty and cross-institutional partners (i.e., CARE, EHS, etc.) that share responsibility for the success of these critical compliance programs. This position is responsible for timely and accurate reporting to external agencies and to AAALAC, and represents ARC during inspections and site visits by federal agencies and/or accrediting bodies. This leadership role within ORI requires direct supervision of two full-time employees.

Leadership of the Animal Research Compliance Program

  • Supervise and manage ARC team members.
  • Prepare and lead all IACUC related meetings, including the monthly IACUC meetings and Steering Committee meetings, and provide instructive guidance and training to the IACUC to ensure that all programmatic and regulatory requirements are satisfied.
  • Independently prepare for and manage all regulatory inspections and audits and serve as the primary point of contact for federal agencies and other regulatory or accrediting bodies (USDA, OLAW, NIH, Department of Defense, AAALAC, etc.).
  • Liaise with ORI’s QA/QI Manager to support the post-approval monitoring program, research engagement visits, and program audits.
  • Prepare and present quarterly reports to Brown’s Institutional Official for the animal research program.
  • Support the IACUC by preparing meeting agendas and materials, reviewing meeting minutes, training and advising IACUC members on applicable regulations, policies, and review criteria, and recruiting new IACUC members.
  • Draft new policies, directives, and SOPs at the request of the IACUC (and in collaboration with CARE, when appropriate) and ensure all policies, directives, and SOPs meet University and regulatory requirements.
  • May represent the ARC program on other related committees, such as the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).

Regulatory Reporting and Investigations

  • Lead animal research investigations and other internal programmatic reviews, including writing complex reports of the IACUC’s reviews and findings.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of all IACUC-related noncompliance to OLAW, AAALAC, USDA, and sponsors, as required.
  • Lead and ensure the successful renewal of the University’s OLAW Assurance, through proactive planning and convening all institutional parties that serve key roles in the animal research program.
  • Complete and ensure the accuracy of annual reporting to OLAW; ensure timely and accurate noncompliance reporting to OLAW, sponsors, and AAALAC.
  • Represent ARC in contributing to the institution’s AAALAC Program Description.
  • Represent ARC during inspections and site visits by federal agencies and/or accrediting bodies.

Management of Brown Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight program

  • Lead the University’s Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight (ESCRO) program, including providing administrative and compliance support to the ad hoc ESCRO committee.
  • Develop outreach and education to the Brown community regarding the use of human embryonic stems cells in research and ensure timely notification of evolving regulatory changes in this area.
  • Ensure close coordination between the ESCRO and other regulatory committees (e.g., IACUC, IRB) where overlap involving human embryonic stem cells may occur.
  • Evaluate and, if practical, implement an electronic systems solution for ESCRO applications that allows for integration with related regulatory areas (e.g., IACUC, IRB, MTAs, etc.).


  • Required:  Bachelor’s degree plus 6-8 years of animal research compliance experience, or equivalent of education and experience.
  • Preferred:  CPIA certification strongly preferred; CPIA eligibility required.


  • Demonstrates proficiency with applying the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, PHS Policy on Humane care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA AWA and Animal Welfare Regulations, and Department of Defense regulations pertaining to animal research, and working on accreditation reviews by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC)
  • Direct experience managing / supervising a diverse team and demonstrated commitment to staff development.
  • Experience working with electronic protocol submission and tracking systems.
  • Experience in a position that requires working with highly sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Must be able to demonstrate exceptional writing skills, including the ability to translate and consolidate complex determinations and regulations into accessible text


  • Experience supporting an ESCRO or serving as a member of an ESCRO and knowledge of applicable regulations.
