Job Description:
The Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs is responsible for developing and offering non-credit and credit courses and programs for 6,000 high school students. Students participate in programs on Brown University’s Providence campus, as well as online and in other locations. Brown University’s Pre-College Programs are a leader in the field of higher education institutions that provide rigorous academic opportunities to students. These Programs offer students an opportunity to study a wide range of liberal arts subjects that reflect the breadth of Brown’s undergraduate open curriculum while strengthening their connection to a robust community of peer scholars from around the world. Students develop personal and social skills that are critical to success in the college setting and get a feel for college life – the responsibility, the freedom, and the new friendships.
The Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs is dedicated to ensuring a supportive, challenging, inclusive, and equitable living and learning environment for pre-college students who hail from all 50 states in the U.S. and over 70 countries. The planning for and implementation of the pre-college programs are fast-moving and fluid. The division’s shared goals of safety, support, and excellent learning mean that each staff member plays a critical role in the program’s success. This success includes timely, effective, and supportive responses to the needs of staff, students, and families.
The BeU Lounge Coordinator with Brown’s Pre-College Programs offers an opportunity for a graduate student to meet the expectations of a full-time professional role, gain practical experience in student life, develop leadership abilities, and hone supervision skills, in addition to many other transferable skills that prepare them to excel in any future position in higher education.
The BeU Lounge Coordinator position serves as an active contributor and educator within the Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs who is responsible for helping to build more systems of support for students who self-identify in one or more of the University HUG (historically underrepresented group) categories. The BeU Lounge Coordinator will accomplish this outcome by fostering meaningful relationships between members of the Brown community and pre-college students, providing spaces and opportunities for students to gather and share their experiences with others who hold the same identities, exposing pre-college students to Brown and creating opportunities for them to be able to see themselves at Brown in the future, creating intentional programming for students to learn more about college life skills, advising and mentoring students, responding to community concerns, and supporting administrative and operational functions for the Division.
This role works closely with colleagues and other offices to deliver an intentional co-curricular living-learning environment for Pre-College students who hold marginalized identities. This position includes a significant amount of responsibility and the individual hired is treated as professional staff with autonomy and independent problem-solving opportunities. Staff are expected to display professionalism, maturity, positive role modeling behavior, and good judgment at all times. This is an intense and fast-paced environment with atypical working hours that requires flexibility and constant attention. The large size of the Brown Pre-College Programs lends itself to a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse group of students from around the world.
The BeU Lounge Coordinator is an in-person position starting June 5, 2025 and ending July 29, 2025 with the expectation that the position will be full-time (37.5 hours per week) during that time period. This is a seasonal/intermittent position that is not benefits-eligible. Evening and weekend work required. On-campus housing of a single room will be provided as needed. The BeU Lounge Coordinator must have no other obligations for the duration of the employment dates including, but not limited to employment, internship, or academic course (unless directly connected to this position and you have received prior approval from the Assistant Director of Staff Development, Pre-College Student Life).
