Job Description:
SUMMARY:
Lead promotional efforts for Annals of Family Medicine, with the goal of maximizing engagement with works published in the journal, supporting new initiatives or goals of the journal, and articulating the value of the journal’s works in research, clinical, and patient communities. Interpret, translate, and disseminate written summaries of published original research for tip sheets, press releases, and plain language summaries, for a variety of purposes and audiences. Design and produce visual abstracts for publication in the journal and for social media. This may include other art and design work, as well as new and emerging digital formats, for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Keep abreast of scientific communications trends and emerging disciplinary practices. Research and recommend adoption/change of scholarly communication initiatives for the journal, when advantageous, with supporting evidence. Support the editorial manager in utilizing and interpreting bibliometrics and web metrics, including Twitter analytics, Altmetric, and Google, for use in reports and presentations to governing board semi-annually and in preparation for other activities.
This is a fixed term position for one year, which may be extended based upon available funding.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Master’s Degree in Organizational Communications and Public Relations, Science/Health Communications, or the equivalent preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in communicating medical research to a variety of audiences.
- Equivalent combination of skills and experience
Job Competencies
- Must be skilled in communicating medical research to a variety of audiences.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Must be adept at media relations and media amplification efforts, including the composition of news releases and social media messaging.
- Must possess the ability to navigate general web and social media metrics tools; must demonstrate ability to develop content tailored to a wide range of digital platforms.
- Demonstrated understanding of scholarly journal publishing goals and processes.
- Experience working with media dissemination companies and platforms such as Cision/PRNewswire.
- Must possess a collaborative spirit while also working independently.
- Must possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
