Job Description:

The Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs is responsible for developing and offering non-credit and credit courses, programs and experiences for over 6,000 high school students, as well as Brown University undergraduate and Visiting Students from other institutions. Students participate in programs on Brown University’s Providence campus, as well as online and in other locations. Within the Division, there are teams of staff who are responsible for marketing, admissions, enrollment, academic content and instructional delivery, student life, finance, human resources, payroll, and the various policies and protocols associated with this work. Staff work closely with colleagues from across the University to ensure success, including the Registrar’s Office, the Office of Information Technology, and Facilities Management.

The Brown Collegiate Scholars Program (BCSP) is a four-year year-round college access program for students living and learning in Providence. The Program seeks to empower academically motivated public-school students who live and learn in Providence to explore their interests and strengthen their academic preparation in order to identify, select, afford and attend colleges that align with their aspirations. As a reflection of the University’s approach to student-centered learning, focus will be on developing student agency as a means for self-reflection, exploration, and self-determination. Particular attention will be focused on serving students who are the first in their families to go to college and/or who have limited financial resources.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions, the Family and Community Engagement Specialist (FCES) will facilitate engagement initiatives and outreach to families who are either interested in or have enrolled students in the BCSP. These initiatives will be designed to inform families and the community about the mission and vision for students. In addition, the FCES will create programming to support participating families exploration of financial literacy and the financial aid process amongst other college access areas. The FCES will collaborate with the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions to create engagement strategies that can be measured by both the collection of quantitative and qualitative data, which will lead to improvements in parent participation. Additionally, the FCES will work to build a positive family and community experience by fostering and developing relations with program stakeholders, while working effectively with families to maintain parent involvement in the program. Please note – the FCES will be tasked with visiting schools in the PPSD, along with community organizations and different school district functions. In addition, home visits with parents of students in the BCSP is anticipated. Regular travel around Providence is expected throughout the year.

Major responsibilities include:

  • Create and implement programming and engagement opportunities for BCSP families and community. (30%)
  • Create opportunities for BCSP families and community members that encourage program participation and dissemination of pertinent program information. (30%)
  • Actively engage parents in financial literacy and financial aid planning while engaging directly with parents(20%)
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure information is shared in the necessary venues and languages; collect and share data on family and community engagement. (15%)
  • Other duties as assigned, including supporting summer programming.   (5%)

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2-4 years of experience or equivalent of education and experience required
  • Experience in urban schools and/or non-profit organizations preferred.
  • Strong background in education or counseling
  • Work experience with diverse families and community organizations
  • Experience working with first-generation and low-income communities
  • Working knowledge of the educational and financial aid process preferred
  • Superior computing abilities including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps for Education and basic technology troubleshooting experience required. Advanced experience using presentation tools preferred.
  • Experience using Salesforce or a similar CRM preferred.

Job Competencies
