Responsibilities:
The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES) seeks a Communications Coordinator to lead its content creation of all internal and external communications, and to support IBES events.  The position reports directly to the Associate Director of Communications. This is a vital role for IBES in executing the communications strategy via the development of high-quality content and a specific focus on its social media platforms, newsletters, departmental website, and team of student writers and graphic designers.

This position will be responsible for the following:

  • Serve as primary writer and editor for social media posts, internal and external newsletters, announcements, and digital signage in the IBES building.
  • Manage IBES Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, MailChimp, Hootsuite, and ScreenCloud accounts.
  • Upkeep and maintenance of the department website.
  • Publicize IBES news, events, and activities through various channels to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop communications content in alignment with Brown’s policies and protocols relating to visual identity, image use, copyright, use of the Brown name and logo, web hosting, accessibility, and vendor hiring with the department managers.
  • Create digital and print materials for seminars, conferences, scientific programs, workshops, and other events throughout the year, aligned with Brown’s digital-first strategy for communications.
  • Interview faculty, guests, and students, and write articles for the departmental website as needed.
  • Ensure that the IBES adheres to Office of University Communications (OUC) policies, and attend applicable Brown Communicators Group meetings.
  • Create and manage faculty and staff job ad postings on external websites.
  • Coordinate with internal partners such as affiliated faculty and departments as needed for projects requiring collaboration and input.
  • Engage in professional development to remain up to date with industry best practices.
  • Develop special projects as required by the directorate.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public affairs or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of related professional experience in planning for marketing, communications, development and outreach, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience with website and social media maintenance, writing, and posting.
  • Preferred background: familiarity with environmental topics.

  • Demonstrated strong written communication and presentation skills with special attention to detail/accuracy and audience.
  • Knowledge and command of evolving social media platforms.
  • Ability to sustain a high level of productivity and work independently while being part of a collaborative team.
  • Sound judgment, discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong command of AP editorial style.
  • Flexibility in adjusting to changing demands.
  • Proficiency with Google Drive, MS Office, Google.
  • Experience with Canva, MailChimp, and Hootsuite.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Drupal.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Additional Information:
This position is expected to work occasional night and weekend hours as dictated by ICERM’s event schedule.
